Race, creed, PC ethics, Barbra Streisand--no-one is safe in South Park. And now we must also doff our snowcaps in acknowledgement of Trey Parker's super-killer-sweet song-writing talent, which allows the abuse to continue in the best cinematic musical in decades. Mr Mackey provides a template for replacing colourful metaphors in the feel good "It's Easy, Mmmkay" (so Disney can now be said to totally suck buns!) The Mouse's style is beat repeatedly with the fun-poking stick: listen for "Bonjour" from Beauty and the Beast in "Mountain Town" (after a spot of Oklahoma!). Satan sings "Up There" which is "Out There" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Even Saddam Hussein spoofs The Little Mermaid with "I Can Change". The ballsiest pastiche spins Les Misérables into the breath-taking "La Resistance (Medley)". Much of the credit must go to co-writer Marc (The >Addams Family) Shaiman's stunning, mammoth arrangements, all of which are in the best and biggest classic Hollywood tradition. Hypocritical censorship is the film's running-gag and warning message, but somehow that point was missed in replacing several numbers by "name" artist variations. The filthy lyrics stay funny, but any Chef Aid fan knows it's the whitebread/podunk/redneck mountain town inhabitants who should be singing "Uncle Fukka" and "Kyle's Mom's A Bitch" not Trick Daddy or Kid Rock. "What Would Brian Boitano Do?" they ask. He'd eat Cheesy Poofs and singalong of course! --Paul Tonks

"Ooh, suck on my chocolate salty balls / Stick 'em in your mouth and suck 'em." If that line offends you, not only should you stop from reading any further, you should definitely avoid South Park at all costs. Rabid fans of the deliciously disgusting animated series, however, will rejoice at how perfect this disc is; rather than hand you a whack of semi-whimsical material, the South Park boys chose to give the people what they want, and what they want is plenty of songs by the cast of South Park, not just about them. So alongside SP-related performances by Master P ("Kenny's Dead," on which he raps, "My little homey Kenny died tonight"), Perry Farrell ("Hot Lava"), Elton John ("Wake Up Wendy"), and the bizarrely paired Ozzy Osbourne and Ol' Dirty Bastard ("Nowhere to Run"), you'll find the best of the best: songs sung by the original cast. Most appropriately, there is plenty of Chef (a.k.a. Isaac Hayes) action, including "Simultaneous" ("I'm talking 'bout you and me and Winona Ryder / Simultaneous"), his love song for Kathie Lee Gifford ("No Substitute"), and the aforementioned "Chocolate Salty Balls". Chef Aid's undisputed champion track, however, is the tender, passionate, and incredibly touching Styx cover, "Come Sail Away"--performed with more emotion than Neil Diamond could ever muster--by South Park's head cranky son of a crack whore, Cartman. Fans of the show will also be happy to know that this is not the sung-at-top-speed version, like in the episode, but instead a fully drawn out, tortured-artist cut. So often, the funniest ideas on TV fail to translate to albums; happily, this is not the case with this collection. --Denise Sheppard

Mr Hankeys Christmas Classics

1. Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo: Early '50s Recording
2. Merry ~Censored~ Christmas
3. O Holy Night
4. Dead, Dead, Dead
5. Carol of the Bells
6. Lonely Jew on Christmas
7. I Saw Three Ships
8. It Happened in Sun Valley
9. O Tannenbaum
10. Christmas Time in Hell
11. What the Hell Child Is This?
12. Santa Claus Is on His Way
13. Swiss Colony Beef Log
14. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
15. Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel
16. Most Offensive Song Ever
17. We Three Kings
18. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Third time's the charm! Chef Aid was padded with "inspired by" songs, and the Bigger, Longer, & Uncut soundtrack by gratuitous remixes. Here at last is an album containing nothing but the series characters warbling away. From the show itself is "Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo" (embellished with some randomly inserted lyrics), "The Lonely Jew On Christmas" (with a special guest impersonation), and "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel" (with the whole Broflofski family suffering Cartman' s anti-semitism). Guaranteed instant new favourites are "Merry F***ing Christmas" (from Mr. Garrison in fine voice), "I Saw Three Ships" (Shelley Marsh getting ribbed for her teeth braces), and "The Most Offensive Song Ever" (Kenny and Mr. Hankey thinking the virgin birth through). In addition there' s contributions from Satan, Hitler, Chef, and Mr. Mackey--all made that bit more special by Marc Shaiman' s arrangements. The real success of this disc (as always) are the songs from Cartman. "O Holy Night" reaffirms what makes the holiday for kids--presents! And "Swiss Colony Beef Log" is possibly the best song the show has ever produced. It' s a mod-rock parody with the "big-boned" boy bewailing the absence of his favourite Xmas snack. In a word: sweeeeeeet. --Paul Tonks
